Description

This compact mini consumer unit is an essential safety device for fitting a 240V system to a caravan, campervan, motorhome or boat.

The deluxe enclosure contains a fast-acting 25A, 30mA RCD with a 'test ' function and double-pole, 6A and 10A miniature circuit breakers. It also features a reverse polarity indicator warning light that illuminates red if the live and neutral at the site supply are reversed.

It comes pre-wired with installation instructions and the clear cover unclips from the enclosure to allow access to the screws. 'Slide-out' tabs are located at the top and bottom of the unit to allow cable entry.

Note: If you are unsure about installing this system yourself, please consult a qualified electrician.

Perfect for a small boat

I've been sorting the electrics on my boat and wanted to get the AC shore power improved as well. This little RCD box is perfect for the job as it has an MCB that I've directly wired my charger to and an MCB for my one double socket. The polarity indicator is also a great feature. It may initially seem a bit overkill, given I have just the charger and socket as my "AC System" on board and my marina has RCDs on all their shore power connectors, but if I go to any foreign or less reputable marinas without the same high standard of shore power connections, it's good to know that everyone on my boat will be safe when we're plugged in and using the shore power.

Its an ok unit, appears to be the best of an ok bunch.

For a start the wiring diagram is wrong! It shows the line (live) and neutral connected! Thankfully, it is wired correctly.
The case is plastic where strictly speaking it should be metal for greater resistance against fire - as is required if this was to be installed in a house or garage etc. I understand there are no regulations for motorhomes etc.
It is fitted with 6amp and 10amp MCBs. The choice of 10amp puzzles me when UK plugs are a max of 13amps. That said, the MCB is to protect the wiring to the 13amp sockets which it would, but an MCB of 10amps could see it trip for items with a power rating of greater than 220-240V x 10amp = 2200-2400W e.g. a fan heater or a combination of devices such as a toaster and a kettle at 1000W and 1500W respectively = 2500W. It seemed too low to me. So I replaced it with a 16amp MCB which appears to be the only next available size from GACIA. (I wired the sockets with 2.5mm2 cable not the recommended 1.5mm2) for current carrying capacity of at least 16amp continuous in insulation at 60DegC! The only potential issue is the incoming supply should also be on a a max 16amp. So I could trip the campsite post.
I couldn't find a 13amp double pole 240V MCB on Google. Anyway it is the best of a ok-ish bunch for 13 May 2024.

A good unit for a van conversion or as in our case, updating a 35 year old van. The acrylic door is reversible for left or right hand installation and the MCB labels for charging and sockets is a nice touch as are the busbars linking the MCBs to the RCD. Not sure if the choice of C type for the MCBs is better than type A but overall the unit is compact and a great price. The knockout cable access on the rear panel could have been better thought out but a good little unit.

The Best I have Seen Currently

This unit does provide both Double Pole RCD and MCBs as required in the current BS regs. The RCD is type A which is good. I question whether the MCBs would be better if B rated then they would trip at a lower amount of current for normal domestic appliances. Also consideration needs to be given for fire protection and having this in a metal box would be a further improvement. Good product and a great price too.
