This changeover relay operates on a +12V input signal and has an adjustable delay time (either a delay before ON or a delay before OFF) that the user can configure to meet the requirements of their application.

The relay operates in one of two modes:

  • DELAY OFF - a momentary +12V input is given (e.g. from a momentary switch), the relay energises and there is a delay before the relay de-energises. Note: If a continuous rather than momentary input signal is provided, the timer will commence when the signal is removed.
  • DELAY ON - a continuous +12V input is given (e.g. from an ON/OFF switch), there is a delay and then the relay energises (the relay de-energises when the input is removed)

In both modes the delay time is adjustable between 0.5 seconds and 6 hours, making this relay extremely versatile. The adjustment is made by removing the plastic plugs on top of the relay to access the dials beneath. The adjustment settings are shown in the table below:

Terminal No.

+12V input signal

+12V for load (common terminal)

Normally Open (NO) output

Normally Closed (NC) output

Important:  If the intended load draws more than 10A then this relay should not be used to directly switch the load. In this case the output should be used to switch the coil of a secondary relay that has a sufficient current rating and is fitted with a voltage suppression resistor or diode (e.g. P00694). This voltage suppression is important to prevent voltage spikes damaging the timer relay electronics.

Please note that due to the electronics used in this relay it is not possible to use it to switch the negative side of the circuit.

Safety in Quality

I put together a HD mobile recording system in my vehicle that I wanted to start recording when the ignition was switched on, But, I needed the recorder to remain running for a set time after the ignition was switched off and the key removed & the only way this could be done was by installing a Adjustable Delay Timer Relay with a Delay off timer, On searching the internet I visited Volt Planet's site which had exactly the thing I was looking for, A 12v Adjustable Delay Timer Relay with Delay on & off plus would take much more current than I would be using, this relay was sealed & compact and box shaped just like other 12v vehicle relays, As I had never done anything like this before at my request Volt Planet included a diagram on how to install the relay step by step and with after sales support if & when I may need it, After the relay was installed I found it took me three attempts to set the timer to switch off exactly when I wanted it to. Ok, this 12V 10A Adjustable Delay Timer Relay with Delay On or OFF was somewhat more expensive than the Eastern products that are available to us, But I always bear in mind, You only get what you pay for. Plus when I return to my vehicle I know I am going to find my hard drive full of video images, Not smoke.

This is a very interesting product and it does what it says on the tin...
Very useful, if you want to have an adjustable delay. Lots of uses...

Great product, really useful

I had a cellular router that needs to be powered via the car's ignition controlled circuit as there is a significant current drain, however I wanted it on for a while after the ignition is turned off. This product solved the problem very simply, the box is powered while the control input is held high and the configurable off delay only starts when the ignition input is off. The delay time is configurable up to 6 hours, the only minor consideration is that you set it via an analogue preset so some trial and error required if you needed an exact time delay. Really useful product though!

Shower sump pump

Fitted this to a shower sump pump on our sailboat. Instead of standing with my finger on the button, I can now press the button and it will pump for an adjustable time.

Vague Instructions
Monday, 21 March 2016  |  Andrew

The instructions were vague and poorly printed and did not show the same picture as the actual part. It does not explain that each step of the first adjustment then gives a range of time that can be set. Once you have figured that out the timer itself works fine!

Product worked fine for my needs although pricey. Timer a little fiddly for my aging eyes had to recruit a teenager ! Wiring diagram illegible. Had to download diagram from website, how much would it cost for the supplier to have done that and sent it with the product ?

Relay used for a dash-cam system. Great product just unclear instructions and it takes time to get the time adjustment right.

The initial instructions were a bit confusing for a mere mortal such as myself, but Paul was a great help in sorting it out for me!
